I’m working with a writer from Babble.com who’s writing an article for Down syndrome awareness month and I would love for you to be a part of it! Most people have no idea what it’s like raising a child with Down Syndrome or what it’s like to be born with Down syndrome, the hope of this article (and Down syndrome awareness month) is to help people learn more about kids with Down syndrome.

It’s hard to believe that our official Facebook page passed the 50,000 mark last month! I can still remember the day I started this page (and our blog) back in May of 2011 (which means we’re only a little more than two years old!) and trying to get just twenty five of my friends to “like” Noah’s page so we could get a custom URL! Thanks to my mom, brothers, wife, and friends for making that happen!

It’s hard to believe we’ve only been telling our boy’s story for only a little over two years. It goes without saying that I never expected this thing to take off like it has. Our family has made countless friendships literally all over the world through this blog and our Facebook page.

In addition to the friends we’ve made, we also receive messages on an almost daily basis about how this blog and Facebook page has been a source of encouragement and hope for parents who have received a Down syndrome diagnosis…which is awesome since creating Down syndrome awareness is one of the main reasons I started doing all of this in the first place!

Today kicks off National Down Syndrome Awareness Month which is an entire month dedicated to helping the world see what it’s like raising a child with Down syndrome (don’t worry if you didn’t know there even was such as “down syndrome awareness month, I didn’t either until after Noah was born.) 🙂

I personally believe every day is a great day for parents like myself to help others learn about some of the unique challenges of raising a child with Down syndrome as well as how much  children with Down syndrome have in common with typical children. However, I do think having an entire month specifically dedicated to raising awareness about Down syndrome is a fantastic jump start to help us remember that every day an great opportunity to rise awareness.

This morning I posted the following comment on our Facebook page:

“The saying “God only gives special children to special people” is whack. Please stop saying it. #SpecialNeedsProTip :-)”

Boy, oh boy, I had no idea how much “Facebook controversy” that status update would cause, or how upset it would make some people.

Most people agreed with me, but a few didn’t. One person actually  left a comment saying, “I used to love this page ….[but] I really want to cuss you all out ..” LOL…Wow! You want to “cuss me out” because of a Facebook status update? Yikes! *hugs*

I never want to purposely upset anyone. And I also I realize that a few folks may have misinterpreted / misunderstood the meaning behind my comment so I thought I would write a blog post explaining the meaning behind my  Facebook comment this morning.

Does God really only give “special kids” to “special parents?”  The answer is both yes…and no. In other words, I think that statement is both whack…and un-whack.
